cruden bay to rattray bay – storm approaching

Woke up this morning to rain and gale force winds. Seems to be a weather front coming over that is getting weather warnings on the news. This was first morning to put the tent away in such weather. Once kitted up there was no problem at all. Splayed like a jellyfish on top of the tent I battled with folding the tent away in wind and rain.

A few miles up the road to Peterhead – I thought positively that the tourist information centre would be sure to advise navigation of my trip up and around to Inverness, but nothing to be found there. Ended into the library and searched the net to find the ‘Lighthouse Cottages’.

Cycled north east to Rattray Bay along the A90 – not too busy and still a strong southerly wind behind me. Cycling with excitement – just knew that this place was going to be my ‘rest bite’ stop. I couldn’t wait.

Met by a friendly and warm smiling Rob, along with Isla and Rufus (the dogs). Instantly I just felt right at home. To be somewhere away from the hectic city life or busy town roads – it was such a pleasure (the pot-holed and sand duned road down there was not so great to ride)

My fellow house mates for the night are John and David. John is an Irish oil worker on the rigs (quite a colourful character and keeps feeding me Irish whiskey) and David works in Peterhead with autistic children. We all headed out – kitted up. It was beautiful to see. The lighthouse and bay looked amazing in the light – the storm was approaching.

I have never in my life been in such strong winds – my leggings exposed a small strip of skin and it was whipped and exfoliated to death by the sand – it was so bloody painful. Shortly the rain came and then the storm.

Now I’m sat inside with the storm in full flow – windows rattling, dark skies, loud hushes and whooshes listening to John’s tales of being a kid in Ireland and how he doesn’t mean anything about his connotations of women, Margaret Thatcher, double whiskeys and meditation – funny.
