Arrived into Bergen today after a very short flight from the Shetlands. Had no problems with getting the bike over, mind it is still in low season so the flight only had 9 people on it – maybe that be the reason there was no issue. I did feel a bit of an idiot though wrapping a ridiculous amount of bubble wrap around it – but it kept it nice and snug. Getting into Bergen felt much busier that I remember from before.
I was here last year with the cruise ship and we had an amazing time hiking up Mount… let me find out. It was quite cold then but this was our first escape to mountains and away from the ship so we were on a mission to swim in the lake at the top. Looking back now I can’t believe it was only last year. Time is a funny old thing.
The hostel here is Bergen was full of friendly faces and friendly people – was the largest room of beds I had seen in my life! But it is a great place and very central.
Was fortunate to meet some other cyclists that had been touring around Norway and was great to find out how they got about day to day etc’. Another cyclist is also heading in the same direction although had cycled another part in Denmark, Holland and Belgium. So far it seems this problem with getting over to Bergen from the Shetlands etc’ is a real issue for most touring cyclists. They don’t want to book the flights as there is somewhat of a deadline to meet which is not nice (as I experienced) and the withdrawl of the ferry service is not only annoying for cyclist doing the North Sea Cyclists but also the Shetlands Isle people and then the Norwegian folk are not happy about it. Anyhow, so interesting all round to be in Bergen and chatting to other cyclists.
Met a great bunch of Irish fella’s doing a kayak tour for charity – they were happy all time round as they just finished an endurance paddle from what they talked about.
