The days and days I have been looking for internet amaze me now. I have spent many many hours trying to first explain Internet – always thought Internet was a word that was the same in many languages – like the profound brand names such as Coca Cola or McDonald’s. Not here, no comprende of “Wifi, website, worldwide, e-mail, hotmail, computer, laptop” – nothing, just blank faces. When working on the ships there was always immediate access to internet in the port – either in the port terminal or a small bar, cafe/restaurant. I took this for granted presuming internet was easily accessible – oh how wrong was I.
Left the beach campsite in Loderups in the rain (but it was nice rain) and headed to Ystad to find internet to update the blog and to get in contact with some loved ones. Again I trawled the cafes, restaurants and nothing. It was funny at one cafe (it had an outside area) i asked the waitress for internet or did she know anyway? she didn’t know, so she asked the ladies she was cleaning the table for, they didn’t know so asked the 2 gents behind them, who also didn’t know, who asked the couple sat next to them who didn’t know, who asked ‘another’ couple who didn’t know. The whole lot of them were sat there discussing this and then about 5-10 minutes passed of them all just talking and the waitress turns back to me and says ‘sorry we don’t know’. It made me laugh and they all laughed too.
Later I was directed to the Bibliotek and managed to quickly get onto my e-mails but my wifi didn’t work and it was about to close – ahhhh headache! Later I wandered down an old alley in the Ystad – it’s very pretty by the way – reminds me a lot of Brugge – small little terraced cottages and cobbled streets. Found this super nice arty/crafty cafe and ordered the best cake and found out that they infact had internet – spent 2 hours taking on skype and eating cake. Was super nice to be in touch.
