Just a short ride to Amble to see how the bike felt with less weight on the bike (had stripped my panniers down to the most basic of ‘stuff’ needed).
The journey was soooo well signposted. Am so impressed at the signage that has been positioned and used on the roads to direct cyclists. GPS was switched on but in general I followed Route 1.
Passed St Mary’s lighthouse – as kids my sister and I would come here with my Grandparents every summer – we would bring sandwiches and I remember once I broke the very very old/ancient seat near the toilets – stood on top of it and ‘it just broke’ (did a lot of breaking things when I was younger – take after my mum). Anyway, so we marched the whole way home in silence – funny now looking back over the memory.
From Tynemouth into Blyth the route was mostly walkways (the split ones between walkers and cyclists). Then into Blyth, things got a little more residential and (for me) confusing. Saw a few other touring cyclists – was dead nice to see their set up and well just to see them – was surprised to notice they were all much older than me – on average I would guess say of the age of 50+.
Had a spot of tea in the sunshine and looked over my route (GPS V paper map)
The next section from Blyth to Amble was cycling on an old railway track – a bit closer to the coast but still protected by the sand dunes. Made this in good timing and arrived in the quiet fishing village of Amble. Greeted by a warm and friendly Clive and Catherine.
